Nollywood is the nickname for the Nigerian film industry, which started developing in the 1970s. Nowadays, Nollywood is considered as the biggest movie industry in the world. Hollywood or Bollywood? Nothing against the 2000 Nollywood movies which get produced every year. The average time of shooting a film in Nigeria takes around ten days and costs less than 25.000 USD. Even though Nollywood produces less quality movies than Hollywood or Bollywood with shacking pictures or bad sounds, Nigerian people love their Nollywood movies. The reason? The stories don't spin around Hollywood love cliches or action, but topics, which are really interesting for people in Nigeria: magic, problems of modernisation or tribal loyalities.

Who are the Most Famous Nigerian Nollywood Actors and Actresses of All Time?

Regina Askia-Williams

Regina Askai-Williams was born in 1967. She became famous as an actress and model, but is also a nurse, educational activist and producer. The former Miss Unilag from 1988 gained a lot of attention as a beauty peagant winner, then became a model and finally an actress in 1993. Regina Askia-Williams was playing a gold digger in the Nigerian soap opera Fortunes. She finally worked her way up to get bigger roles in Nollywood movies in the 90s and early years of 2000s. She holds a degree in biology from University of Lagos and has two children with her American husband Rudy Williams. Regina Askai-Williams is currently living in New York City as a nurse.

Ramsey Nouah

Ramsey Nouah was born in 1970 and is one of the most famous Nollywood actors of all time. Same as Regina Askia-Williams, Ramsey started his acting career in the daily tv soap opera Fortunes and has since then played in several Nollywood movies including My Love or Weekend Getaway. Ramsey Nouah studied at University of Lagos. His wife Emelia Philips-Nouah and their four children are trying to stay out of media.

Monalisa Chinda

Nollywood actress Monalisa Chinda was born in 1974. She has six younger siblings and attended the Army's Childrens School GRA for primary education. The famous Nigerian tv personality had her debut in the movie Pregnant Virgin in 1996 and debuted as a producer for the movie Kiss and Tell. Besides producing and acting, Monalisa Chinda is doing a lot of charity work. She was married with Dejo Richards, with whom she also has a daugther, until they got divorced in 2009. In 2016, Monalisa China married Victor Tonye Coker, who has most of his life lived in Germany. The two first met each other when Monalisa was 14 years old.

Nkem Owoh

Nigerian Nollywood actor and comedian Nkem Owoh had his debut in the movie Osuofia in London in 2003. The studied engineer was kidnapped in 2009 and his kidnappers wanted 15 million naira ransom for his freedom. During this hard time, people and media  started assuming that Nkem Owoh is dead. Its said that his family finally gave 1.4 million to the kidnappers.

Desmond Elliot

One of the best Nollywood actors, politicians and director Desmond Elliot was born in 1974. He already starred in more than 200 Nollywood movies and tv shows. Desmond Elliot studied economics at Lagos State University. In 2015, he won the Surulere Constituency in the Nigerian General Elections. Desmond Elliot is married with Victoria Elliot and has four children. He once stated that his wife "is the whole world for me". They dated for eight years, until they finally got married. He especially adores, that she understands and takes care of him.

Stephanie Okereke Linus

Stephanie Okere Linus was born in 1982 and is a famous Nigerian actress, model and movie director. She studied English and literature science at University of Calabar and has seven siblings. Her first movie appearance was in 1997 in the film Compromise 2. In 2005, the famous Nollywood actress suffered from injuries after a car accident and started studying at the acting school New York Film Academy in 2008 after her recovery. Stephanie Okere Linus is married with Linus Idahosa, who is her second husband. The two became parents of a baby boy in late 2015.

Patience Ozokwor

Nigerian Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor (Mama G) was born in 1958 in a village and married at the age 19. Besides acting, she is also a fashion designer, musician and a studied teacher. Patience Ozokwor has three biological and five adopted children. In August 2015, newspapers revealed that the Nollywood actress got married to a Nigerian politician named Michael Diden. Her first husband died in 2002 due to a terminal disease.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeine was born in 1978. She started acting in 1995 in a movie called Venom of Justice. The studied estate manager, who holds a degree from Yaba College of Technology, already appeared in 300 movies. Omotola Jalade Ekeine is also active in human rights and was honored as one of the 100 most influential people of 2013 according to Times Magazine. The mother of four children and wife of Capt. Matthew Ekeinde launched her own reality tv show in 2012 called Omotola: The Real Me.

Uche Jombo 

Nigerian actress Uche Jombo was born in 1979. She studied at the University of Calabar and the Federal University of Technology Minna mathemathics and statistics and entered the Nigerian movie industry in 1999. Uche Jombo is married with Kenney Rodriguez and has a son called Matthew Rodriguez.

Jim Iyke

Very popular Nigerian actor Jim Iyke was born in 1976. He has seven siblings and studied Banking and Finance and Philosophy at the University of Jos. Jim Iyke began acting in 2001 and already starred in 150 Nollywood movies. He is considered as one of the highest paid Nollywood actors and is also founder of the Jim lyke Foundation for Children with Special Disabilities. Jim Iyke has one son with Nadia Buari and is rumored to have another baby boy with a woman, who left Nigeria when she was only 4 months pregnant.

Rita Dominic 

Nollywood actress Rita Dominic was born in 1975. She has three siblings and her father was a doctor. Rita Dominic studied at the University of Port Harcourt. Until now, she played in around 100 different Nollywood movies and already started acting as a child. Rita Dominic is one of the top earning Nigerian actresses and has no children nor she is married until now. The Nollywood actress once admitted in an interview, that she would like to get married, have children and settle down, but only once she feels the time is right.

Ini Edo

Ini Edo is a Nigerian actress born in 1982. She already starred in more than 200 movies and was one of the judges of Miss Black Africa UK Pageant in 2013. Ini Edo was married with buinessman Philip Ehiagwina for six years until their divorced in 2014 and holds a degree in Theatre Art from University of Calabr. The Nollywood actress loves clubbing and hanging out with friends.

Genevieve Nnaji 

Genevieve Nnaji is a Nigerian actress born in 1979. She grew up amongst seven siblings and a father, who was an engineer and a mother, who was a teacher. Genevieve Nnaji started acting as a child in the tv series Ripples and got her first big Nollywood role at age 19 in the movie Most WantedThe Nollywood actress launched her own clothing line in 2008.
